The short version: Smaran is built to be private by default. We do not sell your data, we do not run ads, and we collect only the minimum information needed to make the app work. Your prayer practice is your own.

2.1 Information you provide
- Account details — your name and email address if you create an optional account.
- Preferences — your chosen deity (Ishta Devata), prayer schedule, and notification settings, stored to personalise your experience.
- Support messages — any content you send us when you contact support.
2.2 Information collected automatically
- Location — approximate city-level location (or a precise point you choose to share) used solely to compute local sunrise, sunset, and tithi timings. This is processed on-device and never uploaded to our servers.
- Crash and diagnostic data — anonymised crash logs to help us fix bugs. No personally identifiable information is included.
- Basic analytics — aggregate, anonymised usage counts (e.g., how many users opened the mala counter today). Individual usage patterns are never tracked.
2.3 Information we do NOT collect
- The specific mantras or prayers you chant or listen to.
- Your japa counts or prayer journal entries — these live only on your device.
- Biometric data, health data, or any sensitive personal data.
- Advertising identifiers (we do not run ads).
3. How we use your information
- To deliver core app functionality — personalised reminders, sunrise/sunset timings, and tithi notifications.
- To improve the app through anonymised, aggregated analytics.
- To respond to your support requests.
- To send you service-related notifications (e.g., new mantra additions, important updates). You can opt out at any time.
- To comply with legal obligations.
We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or sale to third parties.
4. Legal basis for processing (GDPR / India DPDP)
- Contract performance — to provide the service you signed up for.
- Legitimate interests — anonymised analytics and crash reporting to maintain a stable, quality product.
- Consent — for optional features such as location access, marketing emails, or cloud backup of preferences.
- Legal obligation — where required by applicable law.
5. Data sharing and third parties
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data. We share data only in these limited circumstances:
- Service providers — carefully selected vendors (e.g., cloud hosting, crash reporting) who process data only on our behalf under strict contractual terms.
- Legal requirements — if required by law, court order, or governmental authority.

6. Data retention
We retain your data only for as long as necessary to provide the service. If you delete your account, your personal data is purged from our servers within 30 days. Anonymised, aggregated analytics data may be retained indefinitely as it cannot be linked back to you.

We implement industry-standard security measures including TLS encryption in transit, AES-256 encryption at rest, and restricted internal access to personal data. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure; we encourage you to use a strong, unique password and keep your device software up to date.
10. International transfers
Our servers are located in India. If you access Smaran from outside India, your information may be transferred to and processed in India. We ensure adequate safeguards are in place for any international transfers in accordance with applicable data protection law.
11. Changes to this policy
When we make material changes, we will notify you via the app or by email at least 14 days before the change takes effect. The "last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent revision.
